The Marion Choir program achieved outstanding success this week at the Region 1 Choral Performance Assessment Festival, earning superior and excellent ratings. Held in Jonesboro, the event is organized by the Arkansas Choral Directors Association.

During the assessment, choirs are evaluated by three judges on concert performance and sight-reading. They receive ratings ranging from I (Superior), IIR (Upper-Level Excellent), II (Excellent), III (Good), IV (Average), to V (Poor). Marion's region encompasses many schools across eastern Arkansas, including Searcy, Batesville, Marion, and West Memphis.

Marion Choirs earned the following ratings for their performances:

  • MJHS 7th Grade Academy: I (Superior)

  • MJHS 8th Grade Mixed Choir: II (Excellent)

  • MJHS 9th Grade Mixed Choir: IIR (Upper-Level Excellent)

  • MHS High School Concert Choir: I (Superior)

The MHS Concert Choir has qualified to compete at the State Choir Festival, which will take place April 7-11 at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

This year has been remarkable for the Marion Choral Music Department, led by MSD Director of Choirs Dr. Alvin Coleman Jr. and MJHS Choir Director Elizabeth Williams. Notable achievements include the following:

  • 19 students from grades 8-12 securing spots in the All-Region Choir.

  • MHS senior choir member Floyd Stewart earning All-State honors.

The Marion Choirs will showcase their talents at a concert on Tuesday, May 13, at 6 p.m. in the Marion Performing Arts Center. Admission is free, and the community is invited to attend and celebrate the choir's accomplishments.
