🍓🧬 Berry Cool Science in Action! 🧬🍓
Who knew strawberries could teach us so much about genetics?! 🔬✨
Today, our 8th-grade scientists became real-life geneticists as they rolled up their sleeves and extracted DNA from strawberries!
Using a combination of dish soap, salt water, meat tenderizer, and rubbing alcohol, students were able to break down cells and separate the DNA from the rest of the strawberry!
🧪 Here’s the science behind the magic:
🫧 Dish soap helped break apart the cell and nuclear membranes, releasing the genetic material.
🧂 Salt water helped the DNA clump together.
🥩 Meat tenderizer contained enzymes that helped break down proteins associated with the DNA.
💧 Rubbing alcohol caused the DNA to precipitate, making it visible as cloudy, white, stringy material!
The best part? Students got to see and collect REAL DNA with their own eyes! 🤯
We’ve been learning how DNA carries genetic instructions that influence the traits of living organisms, and today we brought those lessons to life!
Experiences like these remind us that science isn’t just something we read about in textbooks. It’s something we can explore, investigate, and DISCOVER!

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts (ASMSA) visited MJHS to meet with all of our 9th-grade students! Students learned about the programs, opportunities, and experiences ASMSA has to offer.
