Marion tennis coaches Jamie White and Sophie Thompson had a feeling that this could be a strong year for their teams in 2026, but the results may have bested even their most optimistic hopes.

White’s Patriots have turned in their finest regular season in her four years as head tennis coach, and the best for the school in recent memory.

“We’ve been program building for a few years now, and we are seeing great results of that work so far this year,” said White. “Our doubles teams have brought in an impressive number of wins and shown us what they’re capable of. Their ability to play well together has increased each match. Our No. 1 boys doubles team is gunning for third place, and our No. 2 doubles team is seeded second. Our top girls doubles team has a chance to finish fourth, and our singles boys and girls have outworked their potential. Three of our four singles players are in the top four of 16 right now.”

Marion’s resurgence was on display this fall as Owen White finished with the No. 2 seed from the 5A East, while Tyler Mann finished fourth. Ella White earned the No. 2 playoff seed for this week’s conference tournament, while Esperanza Riedl will compete from the No. 8 spot this week at Searcy.

Marion’s doubles duos of Henry Nave and Nathaniel Ervin ranked 3rd, while Jack Phillips and Riley Mann and Preslee Graham and Sadia Uddin finished as the No. 4 playoff seed in double competition. Rashi Patel and Rachel Coe finished seventh in the 5A East.

Marion’s varsity performers have led to more matches and sets won in more than a decade, and just in the nick of time as the 5A East conference tennis tournament gets started next week.

Patriot tennis has secured head-to-head victories this fall over Searcy, Batesville, and Valley View, “teams that usually outrank us,” said White. “It’s been exciting to win a bunch of games, and even some of our losses have been close, and that goes a long way to compare for seeding head-to-head.”

Marion’s seeding for the conference tournament will be decided over the weekend, but the process takes into account matches played between singles and doubles teams. The performers in the top four would receive a first-round bye, meaning that one win at the conference tournament would catapult the singles or doubles outfit into the state tournament, which will be held this year at Hot Springs Lakeside.

“We’re so excited to be talking about a run to the state tournament with four of our six varsity teams,” said White. “Plus, our other two varsity teams still have a chance to advance. We hope that this is the year that Marion tennis makes a name in the 5A East, and onto the state level.”

White also points to Thompson’s arrival as a massive development for her team.

“She was already a favorite teacher of many of our players, and now she’s coaching and supporting our team,” said White. “She’s made a huge difference in her first season.”

Marion participates in the 5A East conference tennis tournament on September 30 and October 1 in Searcy, with the Class 5A state tennis tournament set for October 12 and 13 in Hot Springs.
